GGP - Projects FY2013-2014

The Project for Equipping the Kosovo Occupation Health Institute in Gjakova (70,940 euros)

The occupational health center is located in Gjakova, a municipality in the south-west of Kosovo, close to the border with Albania. It features numerous medical departments and belongs to one of the tertiary hospitals in Kosovo. It provides medical services for inhabitants in a large area in the west of Kosovo, on average more than 30,000 patients per year.

Especially the services of the ophthalmology department are in high demand, with about 6,000 patients annually and on average 500 patients per month. Thus, some medical equipment is worn out from frequent use, and the number of medical devices is insufficient to cope with the large number of patients. Furthermore, of one type of medical equipment the health center wishes to purchase, there exists only one in the whole of Kosovo, at the University Clinical Centre in Pristina. Therefore, patients are faced with the inconvenience of being put on waiting lists for several months for their first examination. In recent years, more and more patients are suffering from eye complaints caused by diabetes, and it is expected that the number of patients in need of treatment with this medical equipment will rise up to 1,400 per year.

The purpose of this project is to grant financial assistance to purchase two medical devices, one Green Laser Photocoagulation Device and one Ophthalmic YAG Laser System, so that patients can be treated promptly and efficiently.
