GGP - Projects FY2013-2014

The Project for Rehabilitation of the Primary School "Selman Riza" (58,771 euros)

About 800 children aged 7 to 15 attend the elementary school of this project, which is located in Gjakova, a municipality in the south-west of Kosovo, close to the border with Albania.

This school strives for the promotion of harmony between ethnicities. Children from different ethnic backgrounds study in same classrooms together, with about 20% of the students being part of an ethnic minority and low-level income groups, while the ethnic majority of inhabitants in the municipality Gjakova are Albanian.

The school has never been refurbished on a large scale since its foundation. The infrastructure of the facility, e.g. floors, walls, doors, windows and electric cables have become derelict. Toilets are constantly giving off an unpleasant smell, and it is difficult to maintain a hygienic environment.

The purpose of this project is to grant financial assistance to refurbish the primary school so that the children can be educated in a beneficial environment.
