Please note that all information given here is of a general nature. Application procedures vary according to nationality and the purpose of the projected journey to Japan. When applying for a visa, the applicant may be asked to provide documents which are not mentioned here. VISA INFORMATION FOR AUSTRIAN PASSPORT HOLDERS

A visa is not required for Austrian passport holders who wish to enter Japan for a period of 6 months or less for the following purposes:

sightseeing; recreation; visiting relatives or friends; attending a conference; business purposes (such as market surveys, business liaison, business talks, signing contracts and after-sale service for machinery imported into Japan); amateur participation in athletic tournaments or contests; or other similar activities during a short-term stay in Japan

Nationals of countries that have concluded agreements with Japan for stays of a maximum of 6 months in principle are granted permission to stay in Japan for 90 days at the time of landing. Nationals of these countries who wish to stay in Japan for more than 90 days must apply at their nearest immigration authority in Japan for an extension of their period of stay.

When entering Japan a traveller should possess a fixed-date, confirmed return or onward journey ticket, and any supporting documents which can serve as evidence of the purpose of the trip (such as conference details, details of the host organization etc.). Furthermore, a traveller may be asked to show evidence of sufficient funds for the proposed period of stay in the country.

A visa is required if the purpose of your journey is long-term residency, long-term study, or employment or other remunerative activities.

 

VISA INFORMATION FOR SLOVENIAN AND MACEDONIAN PASSPORT HOLDERS

A visa is not required for Slovenian or Macedonian passport holders who wish to enter Japan for a period of 3 months or less for the following purposes:

sightseeing; recreation; visiting relatives or friends; attending a conference; business purposes (such as market surveys, business liaison, business talks, signing contracts and after-sale service for machinery imported into Japan); amateur participation in athletic tournaments or contests ;or other similar activities during a short period of stay in Japan

If your home country has a reciprocal visa exemption arrangement with Japan, then it is possible to enter Japan without first obtaining a visa for the following purposes:

sightseeing; recreation; visiting relatives or friends; attending a conference; business purposes (such as market surveys, business liaison, business talks, signing contracts and after-sale service for machinery imported into Japan); amateur participation in athletic tournaments or contests or other similar activities during a short period of stay in Japan

Countries which have reciprocal visa exemption arrangements with Japan ( as of June 1998) are:

* Applies only to Ordinary Passports. Holders of Diplomatic or Official Passports who intend to enter Japan for official purposes must obtain a visa.

Although holders of the above passports are not required to obtain a visa before travelling to Japan as tourists, for short-term business meetings or to attend a conference, they should carry with them evidence of the purpose of their trip, of sufficient funds to support themselves during their stay in Japan, and of plans to leave Japan after a reasonable stay. A visa is required if the purpose of your journey is long-term residency, long-term study, or employment or other remunerative activities.

If you contact us on behalf of a third party, please have details of the traveller´s nationality, purpose of journey to Japan, and length of stay intended in Japan.

 

EMPLOYMENT OR WORKING VISA

Please note that the procedure given is only a general one and requirements do vary according to nationality. Please contact the consular section by telephone to avoid confusion and save time.

 

(1) ENTERTAINER

(a) Authorized activities: participation in theatrical performances, musical performances, sports or any other show business; activities such as the production of television programmes, the photographing of models etc.

(b) Period of stay: 1 year, 6 or 3 months

(c) Applicants must obtain a CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY or read on for alternative procedure.

(d) Anyone wishing to enter Japan as a performing artist, model or professional athlete must apply for a visa, regardless of nationality.

(e) Classical musicians, members of symphony orchestras, theatre groups, opera singers, or professional athletes who have been invited to Japan either to perform publicly for remuneration or to participate in a competition must also obtain visas. These applicants, however, may, in place of a Certificate of Eligibility, present the following documents to apply for a visa. Please note that if an applicant is unsure as to what category he/she falls under, the applicant should contact the consular section by telephone to save time and avoid confusion.

(2) PROFESSOR

(a) Authorized activities : research, research guidance or teaching at universities, equivalent educational institutions or technical colleges ( Kotosenmongakko)

(b) period of stay: 3 years or 1 year

(c) Applicants must obtain a CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY to apply for this visa.

 

(3) RESEARCHER

(a) Authorized activities: surveys or other research activities on the basis of a contract with public or private organizations in Japan (excluding the activities described in "Professor")

(b) Period of stay: 3 years or 1 year

(c) Applicants must either obtain a CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY or read on for alternative procedure.

(d) Anyone wishing to enter Japan to undertake research in a company or organization must apply for a visa, regardless of nationality.

(4) OTHER CATEGORIES

The applicant who wishes to apply for another type of working visa, such as that issued to artists, journalists, investors/business managers, instructors, engineers, specialists in humanities/international services, intracompany transferees ,or persons engaged in religious activities, legal/accounting services, medical services or skilled labour should contact the consular section by telephone to find out how to obtain a visa.

GENERAL VISAS

(1) COLLEGE STUDENTS

(a) Authorized activities: Attendance at colleges or equivalent educational institutions, specialized courses of study at advanced vocational schools (Senshugakko), educational institutions designated for preparing persons who have completed 12 years of education at schools in foreign countries to enter colleges or technical colleges (Kotosenmongakko)
(b) Period of stay: 2 years or 1 year
(c) Applicants must obtain a CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY to apply for this visa.

 

(2) PRE-COLLEGE STUDENT

(a) Authorized activities: Attendance at high schools, high school courses of schools for the blind or of handicapped children´s schools, higher or general courses of advanced vocational schools (Senshugakko), or vocational schools (Kakushugakko) (excluding the educational institutions described in "College Students" ) or the other educational institutions which are equivalent to vocational schools in facilities and curriculum

(b) Period of stay: 1 year or 6 months

(c) Applicants must obtain a CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY to apply for this visa.

 

(3) TRAINEE

(a) Authorized activities: Technical or other training at public or private organizations in Japan (including not only training in industrial techniques and skills but also administrative training in local governments and other public bodies, and clerical training )(excluding the activities described in "College Student" and "Pre-college Student" )

(b) Period of stay: 1 year or 6 months

(c) Applicants must obtain a CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY to apply for this visa.

 

(4) CULTURAL ACTIVITIES

(a) Authorized activities: Academic or artistic activities that provide no income; pursuing specific studies on Japanese culture or arts; learning and acquiring skills in Japanese culture or arts under the guidance of experts (for example ikebana, tea ceremony, judo)

(b) Period of stay: 1 year or 6 months

(c) Applicants must obtain a CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY to apply for this visa.

 

(5) DEPENDENT

(a) Authorized activites: Daily living activities on the part of the spouse or unmarried minor child of those who stay in Japan with the status of residence mentioned in EMPLOYMENT OR WORKING VISAS or of those who stay with the status of residence of College Student, Pre-college Student or Trainee (excluding Temporary Visitors )

(b) Period of stay: 3 years, 2 years, 1 year, 6 months or 3 months

(c) Applicants must obtain either a CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY or read on for an alternative procedure.

(d) requirements

If the employed member of the family is still in Austria

Valid passport
One visa application form completed and signed
One photograph (standard passport photograph size)
Passport of the employed member of the family containing a valid working visa for Japan

Documents certifying the personal relationship between the person concerned and the person who is to support him or her Documents certifying the profession and the income of the person who is to support the person concerned

If the employed member of the family is already in Japan

Items listed above

Copy of Certificate of Alien Registration( Gaikokujin Torokuzumi Shomeisho) of the employed member of the family. This is issued by the employed member´s local Town Hall or Ward Office

 

SPECIFIED VISA FOR SPOUSE OR CHILD OF JAPANESE NATIONAL

(1) Personal relationship or status based on which the residence is authorized: The spouses of Japanese nationals, the children adopted by Japanese nationals in accordance with the provisions of Article 817-2 of the Civil Code (Law no. 89 of 1896) or those born as the children of Japanese nationals

(2)Period of stay: 3 years or 1 year

(3)Applicants must either obtain a CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY or read on for an alternative procedure. Please note that the procedure given is only a general one and requirements do vary according to nationality. Please contact the consular section by telephone to avoid confusion and save time.

(4)requirements for visa for spouse of Japanese national

Valid Passport
One visa application form completed and signed
One photograph (standard passport photograph size)
One official copy of the Japanese spouse´s family register (Koseki Tohon or Koseki Shohon). These copies must have been issued within 3 months prior to application for the visa and must show the registered marriage.
Letter of guarantee from the Japanese spouse

(5) requirements for visa for child of Japanese national

Valid passport
One visa application form completed and signed
One photograph (standard passport photograph size)
One official copy of the Japanese parent´s family register (Koseki Tohon or Koseki Shohon). These copies must have been issued within 3 months prior to application for the visa and must show the registered marriage.
Letter of guarantee from someone in Japan, preferably a Japanese relative Original of the applicant´s full birth certificate. Both parents´ names should be mentioned.

 

CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY

If an applicant wishes to work, study or live in Japan, he/she should in principle first obtain a Certificate of Eligibility. The Certificate of Eligibility is issued by the Ministry of Justice in Japan. To obtain a Certificate of Eligibility, the applicant must ask a sponsor in Japan (an employer, spouse, school etc) to contact the local immigration office and make an application on his/her behalf. The application must be made by a sponsor in Japan. It cannot be made by the applicant himself.

Once a Certificate of Eligibility has been obtained, the applicant should bring in his/her passport, one passport-sized photograph, the Japanese sponsor´s name, address and phone number, the original Certificate of Eligibility.

Please note that Certificates of Eligibility expire after 3 months. An applicant must obtain his/her visa and arrive in Japan within 3 months of the issue date of the Certificate of Eligibility.

If an applicant has not travelled to Japan before the expiry date, then a new Certificate of Eligibility must be obtained before applying for the visa and travelling to Japan.
