JAPAN-EUROPE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAM
The Japanese Government offers two types of scholarships to Austrian students:
Monbukagakusho Scholarship for Students of the Japanese Language/Japanese Studies (undergraduate)
Monbukagakusho Scholarship for Graduate Students
Monbukagakusho Scholarship for Students of the Japanese Language/Japanese StudiesIn order to be eligible for this program, students should be proficient in the Japanese language and be enrolled in a university course of the Japanese language and/or Japanese Studies ("Japanologie").
Applicants must be Austrian citizens over 18 years and under 30 years of age (as of April 01, 2010)
Candidates are given the opportunity to study at a Japanese university for one year. The university will ultimately be selected by the Monbukagakusho, but applicants may state three preferences.
Scholars will attend courses and lectures in Japanese and participate in all aspects of university life. This offers a unique opportunity to intensify existing knowledge of the Japanese language and experience Japanese culture first hand.
The Monbukagakusho (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) offers one or two scholarships to Austrian undergraduate students of Japanese Studies per year.
Completed application forms and certified grade transcript need to be submitted to the Japan Information and Cultural Center by March 01, 2010. On March 10, 2010 a written exam and interviews will be held at the JICC. At the end of July 2010 Monbukagakusho will announce its final decision, at the beginning of October 2010 the selected candidates leave for Japan.
Scholarship benefits include a monthly allowance of Yen 125.000 Yen, roundtrip-airfare and university fees.

Monbukagakusho Scholarship for Graduate Students
This scholarship offers Austrian postgraduates under 35 years of age the chance to study at a Japanese university for 1 1/2 or 2 years as a "research student". In general, there are no restrictions with regards to the research subject. Prior knowledge of the Japanese language is not a condition.
It is recommended to establish contact with Japanese universities and in particular with the academic staff who will supervise the research project before submitting the intitial application. Applicants' preferences regarding universities will be taken into consideration where possible.
Filled-out application forms entitled "Bewerbung um ein Auslandsstipendium" available from the Studies Abroad Departments ("Auslandsbüro") at national universities need to be handed in by May 12, 2009. A preliminary selection of candidates will be made by end of June 2009 after an interview with a Japanese/Austrian selection committee and an English/Japanese language test. Those candidates who will be recommended to Japan receive original Monbukagakusho application forms, which need to be submitted to the JICC by the end of August*. In December*, Monbukagakusho will anounce its definitive decision. The scholarship commences in April or October 2010. Those candidates who leave in April stay for 2 years, those who leave in October stay for 18 months.
Scholarship benefits include a monthly allowance of Yen 152.000 Yen, roundtrip-airfare and university fees.

1. Please try to find a suitable university to carry out your study project by the interview in June at the latest. Please note that it is not necessary to get a letter of acceptance by an academic supervisor before the interview.

3. Duration of stay in Japan - the following options are possible:
a) 1 1/2 or 2 years for research students
b) candidates who would like to attend a Masters or Doctoral programme after the 6-months language course the scholarship will be extended until they have obtained their degree.

JAPAN EXCHANGE AND TEACHING PROGRAMME (JET)
The Japan Exchange und Teaching Programme, or JET-Programme was introduced to enhance internationalisation in Japan and to improve mutual understanding between Japan and other countries. Its emphases lies on encouraging the study of foreign languages in Japan and international exchange programmes on a local level. Young Austrian university graduates are offered the opportunity to serve in local authorities as well as public and private junior and senior high schools in Japan for one year as coordinator for international relations (CIR), assistant language teacher of English or German (ALT) or sports exchange advisor (SEA).The program which was first offered in 1987 is organised by the Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Post and Telecommunications, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Monbukagakusho), the Council of Local Authorities for International Relations (CLAIR) and is revised every year. Assistent language teacher for English or German (ALT)
Eligibility criteria
Austrian citizenship
Under 40 years of age by April 1, 2009
Mental and physical health
University degree (minimum B.A.) or teacher's diploma
Excellent pronounciation, rhythm, intonation and voice projection skills in English and German, good writing skills and grammar usage
Be qualified as an English teacher or be experienced in teaching English to foreigners or have lived or studied in an English speaking country of have an excellent command of the English language
Be interested in the Japanese educational system and particularly in the Japanese way of teaching foreign languages
Be interested in working actively with students
Interest in Japan and will to deepen the knowledge and appreciation of that interest after arrival
Total of stays in Japan since 2001 no more than 3 years
Participants in the JET Program since 1999 are not eligible
Successful applicants are expected to make an effort to study or continue studying the Japanese language prior to and after arriving in Japan
ALT Duties
- Assistance in classes taught by Japanese foreign language teachers in junior high schools
- Assistance in foreign language conversation training, etc. at primary schools
- Assistance in the preparation of materials for teaching a foreign language
- Assistance in the language training of Japanese teachers of English
- Engagement in local international exchange activities
- Other duties as specified by the Contracting Organisation
Renumeration
- One year contract (extension up to 3 years possible)
- Remuneration per annum approximately 3.600.000 Yen (35 hours per week)

Selection criteria
First screening of all submitted applications.
Selected candidates will be invited to an interview at the Japanese Embassy in Vienna in April 2009. Travel expenses will not be refunded.
Successfull candidates will be notified within two weeks after the interview.Successful candidates will be required to submit a JET Program Certificate of Health, including a chest x-ray, from their physician and their criminal record.
Participants may be disqualified from the Progam without warning in the following circumstances:
- The participant engages in conduct which is considered to be unsuitable for a JET participant, or there are reasonable grounds to believe that the participant has engaged in such behaviour.
- The participant' s application documents are found to contain false statements
- The type of crime on the criminal record is not suitable for participation in the JET Program.
- The Reply Form and the Certificate of Health singned by examining physician are not submitted by the deadline.
- Those with dual nationality with Japan do not renounce their Japanese nationality before the submission of their reply form.

The Japan Foundation is a semi-governmental organisation based in Tokyo. Its purpose is the promotion of cultural exchange between Japan and other countries. This is achieved by offering various different support programs in the fields of Japanese language training, Japanese Studies, the visual and performing arts, translation and publication, and many more.
The Japanese Studies Fellowship Program
The Japan Foundation Fellowship Program enables scientists, researchers or doctoral candidates involved in Japanese Studies, social studies or the humanities to carry out activities such as research, investigation and producation in Japan. (Please note that applications from the field of Natural Science, Medicine or Engineering are not eligible). The duration of the fellowship varies between 21 days and 14 months, according to the category of studies. Fellows are selected after a screening of applications in Japan.
Basic Conditions:
Only individuals who hold nationality or permanent-residency status in a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan may apply. The Embassy of Japan in Vienna only accepts applications by persons with permanent-residency status in Austria (excluding applicants from Slovenia or Macedonia - see separate country-links on our main page).
Fellowships are not granted to individuals who have lived in Japan for more than one year.
Applicants must have sufficient proficiency in either Japanese or English.
Applicants must hold a "Magister" or comparable degree.
Written consent by an advisor or research associate in Japan must be obtained before the application deadline.
Applications are not accepted for training in the Japanese language, in industrial technology, or in basic training in the field of the arts and traditional culture (tea ceremony, flower arranging, etc.)

Translation and Publication Support Program
This program provides support to projects relating to translating and/or publishing Japanese works on Humanities, Social Sciences and the Arts, and publishing books introducing Japanese culture written in foreign languages. Only publishers (corporations) may apply. Applications by individuals such as writers and translators will not be accepted. In order to be eligible, books need to be published between 1 April, 2010 and 26 February, 2011.

Exhibition Abroad Support Program
The Japan Foundation provides financial support to exhibitions introducing Japanese art and culture abroad organised by overseas art galleries and museums. Applications by individual persons are not eligible. Only exhibitions that will be opened between April 2010 and March 2011 can be considered.

Japanese-Language Program for Specialists
The "Japanese Language Programs for Specialists" are offered at the Japan Foundation Japanese Language Institutes Kansai and Urawa. In these programs, training in the Japanese language is offered for people who require Japanese language skills for their particular vocational or academic purpose. Austrian (plus Macedonian/Slovenian - see separate country-link from our main page) citizens who belong to the professions below are eligible for the program:
for Foreign Service Officers and Public Officials
Young foreign-service officers and other public officials who are engaged in or to be expected to be engaged in duties that require a command of Japanese language will be invited to Japan to participate in an 8 month intensive training course in Japanese language as well as in activities to understand Japanese culture and society. The program is designed for total beginners or those on an elementary level in Japanese language.
for Specialists in Cultural and Academic Fields
This intensive Japanese language course is aimed at specialists (researchers, postgraduate students, librarians, museum curators etc.) in the field of Japan-related social sciences and humanities (excluding Japanese Studies) whose research requires knowledge of the Japanese language. Candidates need to work as professors, lecturers, assistant professors/lecturers or similar positions at an institute of higher education, the civil service sector, etc. or be officially registered as full-time students in a Masters or Doctoral course of a graduate school outside Japan. Basic knowledge of Japanese is required. The maximum age is 40 years.
Duration of course: 2-months course: June to August 2009
6-months course: June to December 2009Program: Improvement of Japanese language skills in the areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Various activities and excursions provide candidates with an opportunity to gain an insight into Japanese society. (Language training does not include supervision in candidates' respective fields of research). JAPAN - EUROPE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAM 2010
As one of the efforts to promote youth exchanges and enhance mutual understanding between Japan and Europe, the Government of Japan offers the Japan-Europe High School Student Exchange Program which enables Austrian students to experience Japan first hand. You will stay with a Japanese host family and visit a typical Japanese high school.
In 2010 Austrian students are eligible to apply for both, short term or long term program. Applications for both programs at the same time will be accepted:
Short Term Visit: from 20 June to 25 July 2010 (5 weeks)
Long Term Visit: from 15 August 2010 to 5 January 2011 (5 months)

participation in other activities, e.g. group tour at the end of stay

- 15 to 18 years of age (as of April 1, 2010)
- Austrian citizenship (holders of dual citizenship Austria/Japan are not eligible)
- keen interest in the country and culture of Japan
- ability to communicate in English and adopt to Japanese family custom (homestay)
- no other imminent plan for a long-term stay in Japan
- participants must obey school regulations and follow instructions by the exchange agency
